My job search, your job search, and the Inter-Web!

Its November already! Which means the fall 2007 semester is quickly winding down. With the end of my program coming in December I need to address the daunting task of finding a full-time job. So where to start? Luckily I know I want to work in Boston and ideally the new job has to be no more than a 10 minute walk from my apartment AND I have to be able to wear sweat pants. Alright perhaps I am expecting a bit too much with those last two things but limiting my search to the metro Boston area will help me focus my attention to companies and listings that are located in downtown. Okay now here comes my shameless plug for the Office of Career Services and Cooperative Education: at the office there is a packet containing the Boston Business Journal’s Book of Lists, a business resource which contains a comprehensive listing of area businesses divided into categories according to specialization. If you are looking for a job in Boston this information can be extremely valuable as it will direct you to specific companies whose web sites you can begin browsing for current job listings. This brings me to another staple of my future job search, the Internet! I know that’s right its good for something other than Facebook and AIM. There are literally thousands of job search pages on the web and I won’t push any…well except that at Career Services we have this awesome page you can register for called e-recruiting, its an online job database that houses local and non-local listings. Employers frequently call our office to list full time positions up on the page, this means they are familiar with Suffolk University and are possibly interested in filling the position with a Suffolk student. Also, do not discount the power of craigslist, many of you maybe familiar with the site from using it to find apartments and roommates (hopefully non-crazy ones). Craigslist can serve as a valuable tool in your job search. Most major cities have a craigslist page, so even if you are not looking for a job in Boston the site could still be an invaluable resource for your search. Anyways…that is about as far as I have gotten on my own search. Some of you maybe be farther along than myself and others may have not even started to think about it, but no matter where you are with your job search I hope the light at the end of the tunnel comes with a signing bonus attached or in the least a casual Friday : )
